How did you start in the jewelry?
I have always loved fashion and jewelry. I wanted to study gemology in New York but my English was not good enough … So when I was 18 years old I left in London for two years, working for a jeweler called Butler & Wilson, this was the thing “in” at this time.
Fashion does not attract you?
In fact between the two I worked a little for John Galliano when he started. I had lots of friends who worked for him too, so it was pretty fun. Then I helped Victor Edelstein, who was the designer of Princess Diana. I organized his shows, and then it led me to work with Philip Treacy … It was a time when fashion was very funny, there was Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, then everyone makes …
For you, a jewell, what is it?
This is something you live with and even live after you. I have this great chance to chose the jewel, and not ready-to-wear, because it has a certain durability, unlike fashion, where you have to work on very short seasons: what is worth a fortune beginning of the season, no longer has any value six months later. I work with precious materials, and on the contrary, I feel that the more it goes, the more my work becomes valuable. Time becomes almost an advantage …
